Close to a thousand runners of all ages raced through Sayville for the 9th Annual Shwachman Diamond Dash on Saturday morning on June 16th. The race is a fundraiser for Shwachman Diamond Project which is hoping to find a cure for children with bone marrow failure syndromes.

Dylan Kolar of Sayville was a year old when diagnosed with Shwachman Diamond Syndrome. Less than 500 people in the world have this disease, and that is why Dylan’s mom – Jennifer Kolar wanted raise funds and awareness to help the project. With help from her family and friends, she started this 5K run nine years ago.

Kolar said, “We have such a wonderful support system, and we could not do it without community support."

Dylan is an active 5th grader at Sunrise Drive and ran the 5K. Not sure what the future holds, the Kolar family held a bone marrow drive at the race, hoping to get more people into the bone marrow bank.

The Shwachman Diamond Dash kicked off with a one mile fun run for kids and then the 5K. At the starting line Jennifer jumped with excitement holding a sign encouraging and thanking the runners.

Anthony Guida of Sayville had one of his best times ever in the run. “It was a great race; it’s always a lot of fun. I do it every year.”

Juan Odalis-Almonte of Farmingdale was the overall winner with a time of 15:26 and Hayley Green of Stony Brook was the first woman over the finish line in 17:20.
