Press Release

The Smith-Wever Sayville American Legion Post 651 cordially invites everybody to our 4th Annual Women's History Recognition Month, special event.

We will be paying tribute to women in the military from our community and surrounding communities. Special tribute will be paid to Lt. Florence Evans a former Sayville resident and High School graduate, who enlisted in the Army as a nurse during WWII. Lt. Evans lost her life in performance of her duty on the last day of WWII. She was decorated with the Bronze Star for conspicuous bravery.

The event will take place on March 21, 2010 from 1:30-3pm on Oversouth Lane, the small municipal parking lot behind Cricket's restaurant, 98 Main St. Sayville, N.Y. 11782. Rain or shine and free to the public.

Participating in the event will be Veterans who have served and continue to serve, the Sayville High School History Club, the Patchouge-Medford all women's R.O.T.C Color Guard, The Girl Scouts of America and several local politicians, including Senator Foley. Channel 12 News will broadcast the event as well.

We would love to see the support of our community as one voice, to thank all the women who have made the ultimate sacrifice by defending our great nation. The Sayville Parks Department will be re-dedicating the Lt. Florence Evans park by finally erecting a sign in her honor.

It is our hope to have our community's support on this special day.
