The three 2010 recipients of Rotary's Annual Scholarship went to Bayport-Blue Point High School student Stephanie Tubiolo, Connetquot High School student Mellissa Felson, and Sayville High School student Mark Lane. The qualification for this scholarship is Service Above Self, the motto of all Rotary Clubs around world. Each winner is awarded $1500. This money is raised through the generosity of the community by their attendance at Rotary's Annual Beefsteak Dinner held in August.

Legislator William Lindsay, while presenting a certificate from Suffolk County said, "These exceptional students humble us with their accomplishments. During these difficult times there is a real challenge because government supplies are not there anymore, and so it is important that organizations like Rotary help this next generation get the education needed to become exceptional leaders of tomorrow."

Members of the Islip Town Board Councilman Steven Flotteron, Councilman Gene Parrington and Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt presented the proclamations. Councilman Steven Flotteron's insight on the great number of outstanding students in our area far exceeding the number of troubled students was gratefully accepted as true. Many of the speakers applauded the devotion of the parents who help direct their children to success.

The winning students fund-raise for others close and far away, and their maturity allows the sense of being of service to others to predominate their decisions. The integrity that guides their behavior makes them shining role models in their local high schools and the statements read from their teachers were very loving. A breakfast for the winners of a scholarship is a great way to hand over the check. Marcia Meirowitz, President of Sayville Rotary made the closing remarks in the style that is distinctively hers; warm, sincere, wrapped in loving humor. Well done Sayville Rotary!
